Absolute path

The full location of a file. It includes the drive letter it is stored on, such as \"C\", the folder name, subfolder name(s), and file name. For example, C: \\Documents\\File.doc is an absolute path.

Access key

A key combination, such as ALT+F, that moves the focus to a menu, command, or control.

Add-in

A supplemental program that adds custom commands or custom features.

Administrator

A person responsible for setting up and managing user profiles, including assigning passwords and permissions, making system-wide changes and who has full access rights.

Arithmetic operator

A character or symbol indicating a mathematical relationship between two or more values or expressions. These operators include divide (/), multiply (*), subtract (-), and add (+).

Auditing

The process that tracks the activities of users by recording selected types of events.

Bitmap

The standard bitmap image format intended for Windows systems (.BMP). Bitmap images support up to 24-bit color.

Browse window

A scrollable window used for displaying rows of information.

Caching

The process of temporarily storing recently used data values in a special pool in memory for quicker subsequent access.

Cells

A box formed by the intersection of a row and column in a browse window or table.

Chargeable

An item of time which is chargeable to a client.  See also \"Non-chargeable\".

Client

An individual or organisation who instruct solicitors to act on their behalf.

Clipboard

A temporary storage place for retaining information that was selected and copied or cut from a file. This stored data can be pasted or copied into files such as Word documents. Whenever new information is copied or cut, it replaces the previous information copied into the Clipboard.

Column

The vertical division of a browse window or table.

Column header

A column heading. The letters or numbers that appear at the top of the columns in a browse window or table.

Command

An option on a menu that initiates an action.

Comparison operator

A character or symbol indicating a relationship between two or more values or expressions. These operators include less than (<), less than or equal to (<=), greater than (>), greater than or equal to (>=), not equal (<>), and equal (=).

Copy of Documents

Any file that is associated with another program (e.g. .docx, .xlsx, etc.) which is stored in Document Management.

Cost centre

A group of departments used for accounting purposes.

Cost group

A group of fee earners who charge the same rate.

Criteria

Conditions you specify to limit which records are included in the result set of a search or filter.

CSV

Comma Separated Value. Commonly used for exporting data to other programs such as Excel.

Data type

The characteristic of a variable that determines what kind of data it can hold. Data types include Character, Integer, Decimal, Date, and Logical.

Database

A collection of data related to a particular subject or purpose. Within a database, information about a particular entity, such as a client or matter, is categorised into tables, records, and fields.

De minimis provisions

The sum in lieu of interest is calculated over the whole period for which money is held; if this sum is £20 or less, the solicitor need not account to the client. If sums of money are held in relation to separate matters for the same client, it is normally appropriate to treat the money relating to the different matters separately, so that, if any of the sums calculated is £20 or less, no sum in lieu of interest is payable. There will, however, be cases when the matters are so closely related that they ought to be considered together - for example, when a solicitor is acting for a client in connection with numerous debt collection matters.

Default

A predefined setting. You can accept the default option settings, or you can change them to suit your own preferences.

Desktop

The on-screen work area on which windows, icons, menus, and dialog boxes appear.

Dialog box

A secondary window that contains buttons and various kinds of options through which you can carry out a particular command or task.

Documents

Any file that is associated with another program (e.g. .docx, .xlsx, etc.) which is stored in Document Management.

Drop-down arrow

An arrow associated with some toolbar buttons, combo or list boxes indicating a list you can view by clicking the arrow.

Drop-down hotspot

Specially formatted text that, when clicked, displays additional text below. When users click the hotspot again, the drop-down text collapses from view. Drop-down items can include any topic element, including text, tables, popups, etc.

Drop-down menu

An element that enables users to make a selection by clicking a drop-down menu and choosing one of the listed options.

Export

The ability to copy data from the current application so that it can be used in an external program.

Expressions

A combination of operators, variables, and constants that yields a string, number, or object. An expression can be used to perform a calculation, manipulate characters, or test data.

Fee earner

Anyone at a firm who charges for the work they perform on behalf of a client.

Field

An element that contains a specific item of information, such as a surname, e.g. Smith.

Filter

To display only the rows in a list that satisfy the conditions you specify.

Forum

Also referred to as bulletin boards and discussion groups. Online places where users can exchange information with others by typing and posting messages.

Full-text search

A search feature that allows you to search for text that occurs in the content of topics. You access full-text search by entering text in the Search field.

Glossary

A list of terms and definitions related to the subject matter. Clicking a term in the top pane displays a corresponding definition in the lower pane.

Gridline

Thin lines that indicate the cell boundaries in a browse window or table. Gridlines do not print out when you print.

Group

Groups are a collection of page objects (e.g. text boxes, combo boxes, etc) stored as a single item.

Hotspot

A clickable area in a topic (or image) that opens other topics, displays text-only popups or additional text, plays sound or video, or jumps to Web sites, newsgroups, or other destinations.

HTML

Hypertext Markup Language. The language used for developing pages on the World Wide Web.

Hyperlink

Icon

A small image displayed on the screen to represent an object, action or task. Icons serve as visual pointers or shortcuts.

Import

The ability to copy data from an external source so that it can be used in the current application.

Index

Indexes provide a way to find information in an online system. An online index is a multi-level list of keywords that are associated with topics. When users select keywords, topics open in the viewer or browser.

Item

An item is the basic element that holds information (similar to a file in other programs). Items include clients, matters, propects, projects, etc.

JPEG

Joint Photographic Expert Group format. Compressed high-color or true-color images, best for photographs and for images that contain a variety of tonal values. Files of type '.jpg'.

KeyMenu

The navigation view that provides a keyboard orientated method of navigating, using a predefined series of numbers.

Label

Text attached to any field, command, tab, etc.

Link

A clickable area in an HTML-based Help topic or Web page that enables users to navigate throughout the content. Text links are typically formatted with underlined and colored text. Link destinations are most often another topic or Web page, but they can also go to other elements such as email addresses, documents, etc. (Also called \"hyperlinks\").

ListBar

The navigation view that contains icons, used to switch between the different areas of the program. You can also hide the ListBar, resize it, and customise it in other ways.

Macro

An action or a set of actions you can use to automate tasks.

Matter

A piece of work to be undertaken by a solicitor on behalf of a client. See also \"Client\".

Menu

A list of commands that is displayed when you click a menu name on a menu bar or other toolbar.

Menu bar

The horizontal bar below the title bar that contains the names of menus.

Merge field

A placeholder that you insert in a document or report to extract information. For example, inserting the merge field «Surname» inserts the surname stored in the Surname field.

Navigation pane

The column on the left side of the v10 Desktop window that includes panes such as Client or Matter and the shortcuts or folders within each pane.

Non-chargeable

An item of time which is not chargeable to a client.  See also \"Chargeable\".

Null

A value indicating that a variable contains no valid data. Null is the result of an explicit assignment of Null to a variable or any operation between expressions that contain Null.

Numeric expression

Any expression that can be evaluated as a number. Elements of an expression can include any combination of keywords, variables, constants, and operators that result in a number.

Object

Page objects are used as placeholders, a means of displaying data in a page, e.g. text labels, text boxes, combo boxes, radio sets, etc.

Online Help

Information onscreen, groups of related topics connected by hyperlinks accessed using your computer.

Operand

A value manipulated by an operator. See also \"Operator\".

Operator

A symbol or other character indicating an operation that acts on one or more elements, e.g. '=' equals to, '+' add, 'AND' and, etc.

PAF

Post Office Address File system. Used to match addresses based on postcode or partially completed addresses.

Pane

A portion of the window bounded by and separated from other portions by vertical or horizontal bars. Often used to display a left or right-hand components.

Password

The password stored against each user. Each user generally has a unique user password and must type that password when logging on.

Path

The route the operating system uses to locate a folder or file; for example, C:\\Reports\\March.doc.

PDF

Portable Document Format. Compressed file format designed for distributing electronically and reading online across any platform.

Permission

A rule associated with the program to regulate which users can gain access and in what manner. Permissions are granted or denied by administrators.

Pixel

A single unit of measurement that your computer's display uses to render images on your screen. Short for picture element, one spot in a rectilinear grid of thousands of such spots.

Print preview

A view of a document, report or data as it will appear when you print it.

Project

A piece of work or task performed for a client which is not related to a matter.

Property

A named attribute of an object. Properties define object characteristics such as size, color, and screen location, or the state of an object, such as enabled or disabled.

Prospect

A prospective client. See \"Client\".

Read-only

A setting that allows a file to be read or copied, but not changed or saved. If you change a read-only file, you can save your changes only if you give the file a new name.

The Related Parties tab in the Client, Matter, Prospect, Project and Contact Lists

Relative path

A string of characters that gives location relative to another file. For example, the relative path of an .DOC file saved in a custom folder is as follows: folder_name\\file_name.doc. See also \"Absolute path\".

Rich text format

Row

The horizontal division of a browse window or table.

RTF

Exports data with the original formatting so the information looks identical to the way it's displayed. Many applications import .RTF files, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

Screen resolution

The setting that determines the amount of information that appears on your screen, measured in pixels.

Security

Protection of the computer and its data from harm or loss, implemented especially so that only authorised users can gain access to shared information.

Select

To specify a block of data or text on screen by highlighting it or otherwise marking it, with the intent of performing some operation on it.

Shortcut

Quick access to frequently used actions, tasks, folders, etc.

Shortcut key

A function key or key combination, such as F5 or CTRL+P, that you use to carry out a menu command.

Shortcut menu

A menu that shows a list of commands relevant to a particular item or field. To display a shortcut menu, right-click the desired item or field.

Spreadsheet

A self-contained piece of work containing lists, calculations, analysis, graphs, etc. Used for manipulating data.

Statement

A syntactically complete unit that expresses one kind of action, declaration, or definition. A statement occupies a single line.

Status bar

A horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen that displays information about the current condition of the program, such as the status of items in the window, the progress of the current task, or information about the selected item.

Step

String expression

Any expression that evaluates to a sequence of contiguous characters. Elements of a string expression can include a function that returns a string, a string literal, a string constant, a string variable, a string Variant, or a function that returns a string Variant    (VarType 8).

Style

A combination of formatting characteristics, such as font, font size, and indentation, that you name and store as a set. When you apply a style, all of the formatting instructions in that style are applied at one time.

Submenu

A menu that appears when a user points to a command on a higher-level menu.

Syntax error

An error that occurs when you enter a line of code that Workflow Designer doesn't recognise.

Tab

A labelled group of options used for related settings or information.

Tab order

The order in which the focus moves from one field to the next as you press TAB or SHIFT+TAB.

Table

One or more rows of cells commonly used to display numbers and other items for quick reference and analysis. Items in a table are organized into rows and columns.

Table of contents

Similar to a table of contents in a printed manual, an online table of contents is a tree structure that displays topics in an expandable / collapsible hierarchy. Tables of contents are commonly used to navigate through the structure of a Help system and find information. Book and page icons (as well as other types) are used to represent the topic destinations. (Also called \"TOC\").

Template

A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a document.

Title bar

A horizontal bar at the top of a window, dialog box, or toolbar that shows the name of the document, program, or toolbar, etc.

Toolbar

A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands.

TreeView

The navigation view that contains a hierarchical representation of the folders, files, and other resources in the program. For example, Windows Explorer uses a tree view to display the resources that are attached to a computer or a network.

TXT

Exports data as straight text (without formatting). All text editors such as the Windows Notepad support text-only files. Many applications, including Microsoft programs, also support text-only files.

Undertaking

A transaction that has been agreed between the firm and a client, bank, building society or another firm, that is not to appear on the ledgers.

Uniform Resource Locator

An address that uniquely identifies a location on the Internet. A URL for a World Wide Web site is preceded with http://, e.g. http://www.videss.co.uk. A URL can contain more detail, such as the name of a page of hypertext, usually identified by the file name extension .html or .htm.

User

A person who uses this program. Their access is restricted by the permissions determined by the administrator.

User group

A collection of users. By making a user a member of a user group, you give the related user all the rights and permissions granted to the group.

User name

The name stored against each user. Each user generally has a unique user name and must enter it when logging on.

Variable

A named storage location that can contain data that can be modified during program execution. Each variable has a name that uniquely identifies it within its scope. A data type can be specified or not.

View

Views give you different ways to look at the same information by putting it in different arrangements and formats.

Web Service

Web browser

Software that interprets HTML files, formats them into Web pages, and displays them. A Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, can follow hyperlinks, transfer files, and play sound or video files that are embedded in Web pages.

Wildcard

A keyboard character that can be used to represent one or many characters when conducting a search. The question mark (?) represents a single character, and the asterisk (*) represents one or more characters.

Wizard

A feature that asks questions or prompts for selections and then performs a task, according to your answers.

Workflow

A means of determining which activities should be performed, under which conditions, in order to guide users through these processes.

Workflow step

An action to be carried out when a workflow is run. Workflow normally contains multiple steps.

Workspace

The right-hand pane of the application window. Used to work with the application data.

WYSIWYG

(Stands for \"What You See Is What You Get.\") An editor or program pane which displays something (e.g. a user page) as it will appear to users. Used by developers to design custom aspects of the software while the code is generated behind the scenes.

XML

Short for Extensible Markup Language, designed especially for Web documents.
