File encryption

Via the Document History tab, that appears on various ALB screens, you have the option to encrypt an individual document. Encryption makes a document indecipherable when opened outside ALB and enables you to protect particularly sensitive documents. Document encryption is available for Microsoft Word and Excel files.

Encryption protects documents on your file system. They are automatically decrypted as they are opened in ALB, but you can protect them from being opened by unauthorised users by locking them. See Document locking.

A document that is encrypted is indicated by in the Files list on the Document History tab.

Examples

You could use encryption to protect documents if you were acting for a celebrity, or in a child abuse case.

To encrypt a document:

  1. On the Document History tab, right-click the document and click Edit.

  2. On Edit Document, check the Encrypt file box.

  3. Click OK. The document is encrypted.
